Procedure for becoming a Notary Public
A Notary Public is appointed by your State Senator. Once a State Senator has approved you as a Notary Public and the Secretary of State has issued the Notary Public Certificate, the Clerk of the Court License Department at the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County is responsible for administering the oath of office for all Anne Arundel County Notaries.
The average processing time for a notary application is 6-8 weeks once the application is received by the Secretary of State. Once you are approved as a notary public you must appear in person at the License Department in the Circuit Court to take the oath of office and receive your Notary Commission. Please bring a valid Government issued ID such as a Driver’s License/Identification Card. There is an additional fee of $11.00 fee due to the Clerk for administering the oath. The fee can be paid by cash, credit card, or with a personal check made payable to the Clerk of the Court.
If you have any further questions regarding the process of becoming a Notary Public, please contact the Secretary of State at 410-974-5520.

This process can be done by mail or in person. If you are requesting by mail, the documents and check or money order ($1.00 per certification) should be mailed to:
